Alaska Fishing License Information for Travelers and Anglers

Navigating Alaska’s fishing regulations is an essential part of planning your adventure with Alaska Salmon Guides. To ensure your trip on the Kenai River or Kasilof River is stress-free and legal, we have compiled this straightforward guide to the licensing requirements for the state of Alaska.

Who Needs a License?

In the state of Alaska, every angler aged 16 or older (both residents and non-residents) is required to possess a valid sport fishing license. This license must be on your person at all times while fishing—either as a printed physical copy or a digital version saved to your mobile device.

Where to Buy Your License

The easiest way to secure your license is online through the Alaska Department of Fish and Game (ADF&G) website. We strongly recommend purchasing your license at least a few days before your scheduled charter.

  • Online: ADF&G Online Store
  • In-Person: Local retailers in Soldotna, Kenai, and Sterling (such as Fred Meyer, Sportsman's Warehouse, or local tackle shops) also sell licenses over the counter.

License Pricing (Subject to Annual Change)

License costs vary significantly based on residency and the duration of the license.

License Type Non-Resident Cost Resident Cost

1-Day Sport License ~$15 ~$20 (Annual)

3-Day Sport License ~$30 N/A

7-Day Sport License ~$45 N/A

King Salmon Stamp (1-Day) ~$15 ~$10 (Annual)

Note: Residents generally purchase an annual license. Non-residents have the flexibility to choose a duration that matches their vacation.

Freshwater vs. Saltwater Rules

While Alaska Salmon Guides primarily operates in freshwater (the Kenai and Kasilof Rivers), it is important to know that a standard sport fishing license covers both freshwater and saltwater species. However, if you plan to target King Salmon in either environment, you must purchase an additional King Salmon Stamp regardless of the waterbody.

Special Exemptions

  • Youth: Both resident and non-resident anglers under the age of 16 do not need to purchase a sport fishing license or a King Salmon Stamp.
  • Seniors: Alaska residents aged 65 or older who have maintained residency for at least one year may apply for a free permanent identification card (the "Senior Permanent ID") which covers fishing, hunting, and trapping. This exemption does not apply to non-resident seniors.
  • Military: Active duty military members stationed in Alaska may qualify for resident-rate licenses.

The "King Salmon Stamp" Requirement

If your trip with us occurs during a window where King Salmon are being targeted (typically May through July), you must have a King Salmon Stamp in addition to your license. If you are strictly targeting Sockeye Salmon, Silver Salmon, or Trophy Rainbow Trout, this stamp is not required.
