Jason Simmons - Alaska Salmon Guides

The Kenai River continues to prove why it is Alaska’s premier destination for world-class angling. Whether you are targeting hard-fighting salmon or trophy-sized trout, the current conditions are offering excellent opportunities for both fly and gear anglers.

Current River Conditions
Water Levels: Stabilizing at seasonal norms, providing excellent clarity for sight-fishing in the upper sections.

Water Temp: Holding steady, keeping fish active throughout the morning and afternoon sessions.

Clarity: The famous turquoise glacial water is clear, making for ideal drift conditions.

Species Outlook
Rainbow Trout & Dolly Varden
The trout fishing remains spectacular. We are seeing a high density of trophy Rainbows in the 24 to 30-inch range. As the salmon continue their lifecycle, the trout are heavily keyed into natural food sources.

Hot Tactics: Dead-drifting beads and flesh patterns.

Location: Focusing on the middle and upper sections near gravel bars and structure.

Sockeye (Red) Salmon
The Sockeye runs have been consistent, with fresh pulses of fish moving through the system on the tides. These fish are bright, powerful, and providing plenty of action for our guests.

Hot Tactics: Traditional "Kenai Flip" with coho flies or gamakatsu hooks.

Location: Look for "lining" opportunities in the faster-moving seams along the banks.

Silver (Coho) Salmon
We are starting to see the early arrivals of Silvers. These fish are aggressive and known for their acrobatic jumps, making them a favorite for many of our returning clients.

Hot Tactics: Casting spinners or twitching jigs in the slower backwater sloughs.

Guide’s Tip of the Week
"Persistence is key. When the sun is high, look for the deeper oxygenated pockets. The trout are hunkering down in the shadows of the cut banks. A precise drift with a light leader will often entice the biggest fish in the hole." — Jason Simmons

Availability & Booking
Our private 20-foot drift boats are filling up quickly for the remainder of the season. Whether you want a Full Day (8-hour) immersion or a Half Day (4-hour) sprint, we recommend booking at least two weeks in advance to secure your preferred launch time.

Jason Simmons didn’t just move to Alaska two decades ago; he became a student of its most complex river systems. Originally from Utah, Jason relocated to the Last Frontier to pursue a life defined by the rhythm of the water. After years of honing his technical skills alongside the region’s premier outfits, he established Alaska Salmon Guides to offer a more intentional, personalized guiding experience. With over 20 years of professional experience at the helm, Jason has developed an instinctual understanding of the Kenai River and Kasilof River, navigating their glacial currents with the precision that only thousands of hours on the water can produce. What truly defines a day with Jason is his focus on the educational side of angling. He believes that a great guide is a great teacher, approaching every drift with a patient, organized demeanor that puts both novices and seasoned fly-fishers at ease. For Jason, the success of a guided trip is measured by the guest's confidence behind the rod. Whether he is explaining the subtle science of an egg-drop drift for trophy rainbow trout or the specific timing of a sockeye run, his goal is to ensure that every person who steps off his boat leaves as a more capable and knowledgeable angler than when they arrived. Living and working in the Kenai National Wildlife Refuge has instilled in Jason a deep-seated respect for the local ecosystem. He views himself as a steward of these "bucket-list" waters, committed to sharing the majesty of Alaska’s massive salmon runs and unspoiled natural beauty with travelers from around the globe. His reputation on the Kenai Peninsula is built on 100% effort and a genuine passion for the sport, ensuring that your time on the river is spent in the most productive holes, surrounded by the incredible wildlife and turquoise scenery that make this region world-famous.
The Vessel: Our Custom 20-Foot Willie Drift Boat
The quality of your experience is directly tied to the equipment we use, which is why we operate a state-of-the-art 20-foot Willie Drift Boat. Alaska Salmon Guides: Frequently Asked QuestionsHow much does a full-day fishing charter cost on the Kenai River?A full-day (8-hour) Kenai River fishing charter typically ranges from $285 to $425 per person, depending on whether you are booking a single seat or a private boat. At Alaska Salmon Guides, we prioritize value by providing all top-tier gear, tackle, and expert instruction within our rates. For those looking for a shorter experience, we also offer half-day trips starting at approximately $195, making the world-famous Kenai waters accessible for various budgets. What is the best time of year to fish the Kenai River for salmon? The "best" time depends on your target: Sockeye salmon peak from mid-July to early August, while Silver salmon runs are strongest from mid-August through September. If you are after trophy Rainbow Trout, the late summer and fall (August–October) offer the most intense action as they gorge on salmon eggs. Alaska Salmon Guides recommends booking in July for high-volume sockeye or September for a mix of aggressive silvers and massive trout. Do I need to bring my own fishing gear for the trip? No, you do not need to bring any fishing equipment. Alaska Salmon Guides provides premium G. Loomis and Orvis rods, high-quality reels, and all the custom tackle or flies needed for the day's specific conditions. We also provide professional chest waders or hip boots upon request, so you can show up ready to fish without hauling heavy gear across the country. Is cleaning and filleting included in my Alaska Salmon Guides trip?Yes, complimentary fish cleaning and filleting are included with every salmon trip. Once we return to the docks, your guide will professionally fillet your catch and wash the fillets so they are ready for the cooler. For long-term storage or shipping, we can recommend several local processors in Soldotna or Sterling who offer professional vacuum sealing, freezing, and shipping services to your home. What’s included in a charter with Alaska Salmon Guides?Your Kenai River guided fishing trip includes a seat on a custom 20-foot Willie Drift Boat, a USCG-licensed guide, all rods and tackle, and professional fish cleaning. We also provide fresh local coffee for those early 6:00 AM launches and high-end waders if the trip requires them. Please note that you will need to provide your own Alaska fishing license and any personal snacks or lunches. Do I need a special license to fish for salmon and trout? All anglers aged 16 and older must have a valid Alaska Sport Fishing License. If you are targeting King Salmon during their open season, you will also need a King Salmon Stamp. These can be purchased easily online through the ADF&G website or at local shops in Soldotna. We recommend having a digital copy saved on your phone and a printed copy in your pocket before meeting your guide. What should I wear for a day of fishing on the Kenai River?Alaskan weather is famously unpredictable, so we recommend the "onion" approach: layers, layers, layers. A moisture-wicking base layer, a warm fleece or hoodie, and a high-quality waterproof rain jacket are essential. Even on sunny days, the glacial water keeps the air temperature on the river much cooler than on land. Don't forget wool socks to keep your feet warm inside the waders! Can I book a private boat for just my family or group?Absolutely. At Alaska Salmon Guides, we specialize in private Kenai River fishing trips. Booking a private boat (up to 4 people) ensures you have the guide’s undivided attention and more space to fish. This is the ideal option for families with children or experienced anglers who want a tailored itinerary focused on a specific species like trophy Rainbow Trout. Is the Kenai River safe for children and novice anglers?Yes, the Kenai River is a fantastic place for families. Our stable 20-foot drift boats are safe and comfortable, and our guides are experts at teaching the "Kenai Flip" and other techniques to beginners. We take great pride in being a family-friendly fishing charter, ensuring that younger anglers have a fun, safe, and successful introduction to the magic of Alaska.
